I would not 'endorse' it because I have no personal knowledge of the efficacy
of the procedure.
<< I would think if that toward the middle to end of summer, the time the
rhizome is supposed to come out of its semi-dormant period and begin its
second root-growth cycle, that if you gently dig the soil out from the front
and just underside of the rhizome and dusted it with some root hormone, and
then replaced the soil you dug away, that you could possibly save it.>>
I would be more inclined to remove the apical shoot which controls
development of increase, slice the rhizome into pieces, and bury those. This
procedure is a standard recommendation in the propagation literature for all
rhizomatous plants( per e.g. Creative Propagation, Thompson, Timber Press,
1992). In removing the dominant shoot, the new increase is no longer
surpressed, and also the rhizome is injured, both of which may tend to spur
new growth, at least in a rhizome capable of it. You may wish to check the
Archives for a piece from the Cornell Bulletin I posted some time back on
this proceedure, and a good deal of other useful discussion along these
lines. Use the search term 'partition,' or scan posts circa 4/21/98.
<< I do think I will try JIJ's suggestion on one of my next bloomouts, but
will
also try the above sometime - unless you feel it will result in disaster? >>
Disaster? I really have no idea. But you may wish to consider the fact that
used inappropriately rooting hormone can have the opposite effect than what
you seek.
