Patrick, neither of these forms of I. pallida can be considered rare any
longer (remember that WOI was written decades ago) as they are on offer
from many generalist mail-order nurseries.
The correct name is I. pallida variegata argentea for the white-marked
form, and I. pallida variegata aurea for the yellow. Both are somewhat
unstable and in any big clump you will see fans that are all green. Of
course, these should be pulled out and destroyed or they will take over
from the less vigorous striped fans. It would be expected that the
variegated forms would be somewhat weaker and poorer bloomers than the
all-green ones, since the total photosynthetic area of the variegated ones
would be reduced. Also, it's not surprising that the aurea form is
somewhat more vigorous than the argentea form, because the yellow comes
from carotenoid pigments, which can capture some light energy and pass it
on to chlorophyll, although it is questionable that this could happen if
the cell lacked chlorophyll and had only carotene.
