Greetings, and a cordial welcome from an old timer.
We need to talk.
Here is the situation. When you signed onto the list you should have received
a Welcome Message. That message was very important because it would have
introduced you to the 'style' of the list, and told you about the few rules
that we as a group have developed over the years to maximize our enjoyment.
It is important that you have a copy of the Welcome Message, and read it
carefully, and I'm frankly starting to wonder if everybody received one.
If your Welcome Message got lost in transit, or if it came in and you
discarded it without reading it, please ask the listowner to send you a new
copy. His name is John Jones and here is his address---------->
jijones@ix.netcom.com
When you read your message, please pay special attention to two things. The
first is the part about how this list prefers subject lines to be styled. We
introduce our posts to the list with standardized abbreviations. You will
receive a table of these. If you do not understand how to use them, ask John
to send you a copy of a tutorial I wrote recently on the matter. There are
about 500 people on this list and when we get cranking around here the mail
flies and we like to be able to manage it efficiently. All that is required
is an honest effort to get a subject tag on your post, but you will want to
make that effort.
The second thing you want to note is the bit about not sending a post
regarding personal business to the whole list of 500 people. Simply send your
note directly to the person you are actually talking to. This is not a
Bulletin Board where people pop up as they please and scan the notices, every
person on this list gets a copy of every note sent to the list. A lot of
private conversation takes place off list. Now, not everything you post has
to be interesting to every one of the 500, but remember that if you just hit
that Reply button when a post comes from Iris-talk, you are sending mail to
all of us.
Now, let me mention our Archives. We have Archives going back four years. We
have thousands of posts on thousands of topics. The best way to get some
sense of how the list works as a group is to visit the Archives and read a
month or two of posts. You will get to know the folks, you will get to know
our style. If you want to read more about the Archives themselves, read a
post I put up on 1/28/1999 called a "A Treasure House for All." Our Archives
are here----------> http://www.mallorn.com/lists/iris-talk/
Now, I hope you will make sure you get hold of your copy of our Welcome
Message and take a good look at it. I assure you in all friendship that these
issues are not going to go away, and taking time to get yourself accustomed
to the group will pay off bountifully.
