From the NEW Garden Encyclopedia published by
Wm. H. Wise and Company, New York, 1942:
"Loropetalum (loh-roh-PET-ah-lum). An attractive but tender
evergreen from China, belonging to the witch-hazel family. Only
one species (L.chinense) is in cultivation. A medium sized shrub,
thriving best in a peaty and gritty soil, it can be grown outdoors
only in the warmer parts of the country. In early spring it produces
a mass of white flowers, with strap-shaped petals."
This quote is from a book from my gardening grandmother's
bookshelf. This book is amazing thing and am I constantly using it
as a reference as it is as timely as it was when first published in
1942. There are very few plant descriptions I have not found in it.
It seems as if loropetalum has been in this country for some
time in the white form and not known as 'razzleberri,' which comes
from current internet articles and discussion.
As I mentioned two weeks ago, the local Home Depot has this
shrub in stock now, and it was also advertised locally by a nursery
as "Laura Pendulum," quite a gross corruption, I would say.
