Re: OT: Landscapers

I wish more landscapers would watch HGTV and other shows. It one should hire a
landscaper for creativity, but what one sees in the malls and branch banks of the
land is masses of mono-color plugged into massive amounts of decorative mulch,
providing instant bloom gratitude with an almost total lack of imagination.
Perhaps landscapers in other parts of the country have more imagination, but what
I generally see around here is one of about 3 plans.
The tragedy comes when they are called in to design resident gardens and the
result makes one look around for the bank drive-up window at the side of the
house.
They seem lacking in knowledge or perennials, combining colors, and in general
the creativity one should be hiring them to provide.
Perhaps the customers are driving the cart - people who demand low to no
maintenance and permanent bloom. But then, explain my favorite boondoggle at a
bank that has its logo in annual flowers, and the landscaper comes in often as
loan payments are due, rips out the entire bed and replants in whatever is
blooming that month. Of course winter pansies are becoming as popular as Stella
de Oro day lilies. One time the landscaper was derelict in his duty by a month or
so, the bed was taken over by grasses and weeds and the word went down the street
that the bank was failing - just look how they are letting things run down!
Much of it makes about as much sense to me as states planting the medians of
their interstates with wildflowers that are not native to their state.
