I've been with iris-talk for about 2 months now; I just noticed this OT-BIO
idea, and figured it was a good way to say hi, although I'm sure some of
you have already seen my inputs.
I live in San Juan Capistrano, southern California, about 5 miles from the
beach. Not much fog, though the mornings can be humid. Highs 80 - 90
degrees in the summer (mostly), 60 - 70 in the winter. Many years no
freeze (probably 'cause of the overnight humidity). Sunset calls us a zone
23 or so, I think. That may not match the USDA zone.
I've been growing iris for about 10 years. After I bought my first house,
a lavender/purple neglecta bloomed, and it was about the most beautiful
flower I had ever seen (modern & ruffled). I had no idea what it was, but
I immediately moved it to a cooler spot in the garden and watered it until
it rotted away. Still can't match it, but I did find out that it was an
iris, and my gardening techniques have improved a bit. My early interest
was encouraged by a nice lady named Peggy Carpenter, and for a few years I
was a member of the San Fernando Valley Iris Society. I am a current AIS
member.
I am an engineer. High-tech, optical instruments, micromachines, etc.
Although I've seen many beautiful iris, I couldn't resist the chance to
tinker (make crosses) from year one. Came up with a great ruffled purple
seedling right away, from Honky Tonk Blues x Mulled Wine. I believed the
people who suggested bleach for rot, and managed to kill it by permanently
stopping all root growth. I've had a couple of good seedlings since, but
it's amazing how many dogs and "ordinary" flowers you get when you cross 2
really good ones. So far my best seedling is a lovely 2-year old named
Quiana who gives her mother and I a great deal of trouble.
Always glad to make a friend of fellow iris lovers,
John Reeds

I'm sure this will offend some people, but I think it's funny!
