JI: What was HOT? (There is something new and different)

For early season, KOSHUI NO ASA (Shimizu '98) was spectacular and it
extended into the late season. It is a 9 fall pale sky blue and blooms a
little shorter than most JI. This plant was a hit in Portland last year.

As usual, IAPETUS (Innerst '88) performed wonderfully. There is a good
reason it received the Payne Medal.

The MOST EXCITING plant in my garden this year is a versicolor-ensata
cross, NIGHT FLASH (Huber '98). The 3 petaled violet species like flower
is much larger than most versatas, up to 6" across! It's versicolor
heritage is obvious in the fountain-like foliage, curved stalks and
heavy branching. The ensata parentage is most obvious in the ribbed
fans. It is registered at 43" and exceeded that. BTW, it took Best of
Show at the Diamond State Iris Society (Delaware) Beardless Show. I'll
put my humbleness aside and say that I agreed with the judges on this
one. <Grin>
