Heidi--
The swollen areas, if they are where the flower was, are pods.
Spontaneous pods sometimes have seeds, sometimes not.
Empty pods (air pods, balloon pods), especially on Tall Bearded
are what we get most often. Medians usually have seeds in these
"bee" pods. Any seeds inside will definitely be a new combination.
They may closely resemble the parent(s), but will not be the same.
They may also be vastly different, and sometimes UGLY.
The seeds should be harvested when the pod starts to ripen. It will
turn tan or brown and begin to split at the top. If you do not want to
end up with a bunch of new iris among your plantings, be sure to
remove them before this happens.
You can put a bunch of seeds in a container. We use gallon nursery
cans. Germination varies from 0% to 90% the first season. We plant
seeds in late fall or early winter and let the weather do the work. We
usually see the first sprouts in late March thru mid-May. If we really
to see the results of the cross and not much happens the first spring after
planting, we leave them to winter over for a second time. Results are
often good--we have about 900 seedlings this spring from second year
pots. Transplanting the seedlings, we wait until there are 2-3 leaves and
4" high, but that is up to you. Sometimes we wait until the plants are
much larger. Then you have a season or two until bloom.

Subject: [iris-talk] pod question
Each year, some of my iris develop swollen oblong areas that I am guessing are the pods?
If I open these up, will there be seeds inside? and will these possibly be a new iris combination?
If so, when is the time to harvest these pods? and do I put one seed in a container? How long until germination? and transplanting into the garden?
Thanks for your time to answer these.
