pod question

Hello,
I've been reading with interest the posts about pods and crossing iris.
Here comes a probably very inexperienced question. . .
I've been growing iris for several years, and have not tried to cross any.
Each year, some of my iris develop swollen oblong areas that I am guessing are the pods?
If I open these up, will there be seeds inside? and will these possibly be a new iris combination?
If so, when is the time to harvest these pods? and do I put one seed in a container? How long until germination? and transplanting into the garden?
