Re: HYB: wierd pods? - anticipation

Pods on my stuff varies a lot depending on the plant. As a general rule
they do resemble each other on the same plant. But size hasn't always been
an indicator of the number of seeds. Last year there were two pods on one
that were more than 2 1/2 inches long and and inch wide. The pods yielded
12 & 13 seeds respectively. Lots of fleshy material surrounding those
seeds. Another plant had four pods, all only about an inch tall and maybe
3/4 inch across and they yielded 35-50 seeds per pod. Small and jam-packed
(all had flat sides) and not all the fleshy material of the other pod. When
there has been much variation on the same plant, it HAS been an indication
of fewer seeds in the smaller pod. What I don't understand is why my mature
pods, even the biggest, are smaller than the baby pods I saw forming in Pete
McGrath's garden last spring and this spring. The pods seem to form bigger
than mine ever get. I don't know if that means he is getting more seeds per
pod, but the difference in size is extreme. He had newly formed pods that
were already pushing 3 inches and I've never had one grow that large. I
don't know how big his finally get, but they are surely larger than any I
grow.

Maybe those pods know they are in expert hands there and mine know better.
