We grow and sell (guessing) 60-80 "black" bearded irises. We do not
find them any different to grow than any other color class. If there was
color we find harder to grow I would say it was pink because they seem
to be a bit more tender. Just being curious, why do you consider blacks
tricky? The only thing about blacks (and all darks) is the tendency for
the blooms to burn in the sun.

BEFORE THE STORM was one of the 'tricky' blacks to grow here. I replaced
it twice and finally just let it go. If it did bloom, it was on
a short stalk. I had heard ANVIL OF DARKNESS was easier. Not so. It
died without ever blooming, and I did not bother to replace it.
NIGHT GAME appears to be the best black grower and bloomer here. NIGHT ATTACK
also is a good grower and bloomer, but the blooms are somewhat unrefined
and ragged. MIDNIGHT OIL is a 'burner' and not a very good stalker and
has a bud count of four in my garden. It has increased to a nice clump,
though. WILD WINGS is a good IB here, but it is supposed to be a TB.
It may have bloomed out.
I have been told to get ZATON, and since I usually follow directions,
I have it on order.
So, for me, some blacks are 'tricky.'
