I happen to have a Schreiner's '79 catalog; here are the "Blacks" listed;
1. Black Bart (Schmelzer '69) 36"
Very near coal black....glowing undertone of velvety red, self
beard....airily ruffled...liberal bud count; HM '71.
2. Dusky Dancer (Luihn '67) 36"
Very dark....black-violet self including beard...swirling
falls...excellent substance, HM/AM
3. Spirit Raiser (Schreiner '79) 36"
"In 1945 we were fortunate enough to have discovered a special
"dark" Iris in our seedling beds, by far the blackest Iris known at that
time. It was BLACK FOREST and it has provided the sire for years to many of
the dark Iris. .....evolution here has been extremely slow. ....Spirit Raiser
is the first black Iris so ruffled to this degree. ....... Each bloom is
precisely formed, nicely ruffled and absolutely erect containing medium sized
flowers on a nicely branched stem. What a rare sight!
4. Study In Black (Plough '68) 36"
"A worthy newcomer in the luxuriant, velvety deep red-blacks.
... color recalls its progenitor, Edenite, .... greater sophistication with
precise, sculptured blooms ...strong branched stem and matching beard. HM/AM
5. Superstition (Schreiner '77) 36"
"Sleek and ebony hued, ...rich dark beauty ... three flowers at
a time ... 8 to 9 budded stems. .... wide nd stiff substanced petals....
.... A hint of maroon, deep within the ebony black tints..... HM '78
6. Swazi Princess (Schreiner '78) 36"
"...stunning new dark as if from the depths of the black
continent. ....extreme ebony-colored, indigo-black self. .... beard....same
deep rich black tone of the silken falls. .....black beauty. ...two to
three branches per stem with 8 to 9 buds. HC ''77
7. Tuxedo (Schreiner '65) 37"
"Tuxedo has incredible depth and richness of color and
phenomenal breadth of petals. It is a very velvety, solid blue-black...extra
fine stem...extremely fine branching......HM
