Dear irisarians "over there",
how I envy your warm climate and long seasons! Now, at last, snow is
gone, summer has come and irises and peonies are in full bloom.
ELEANOR ROOSEVELT, wonderful deep purple, looks as a big GRANDMA AMANDA
but for the yellow beard,
LENT A WILLIAMSON, big and beautiful, but falls over,
OLA KALA, dark yellow, very good,
GOLDEN BOW, light yellow, good,
CLIFFS OF DOVER,big, white as snow, very good,
ENGLISH COTTAGE, big, orchidlike, very pale blue, almost white, very
good,
CYANEA, very good, tenacious in blooming,
MRS ALAN GREY, pinkish, not very beautiful, but here in Sweden you have
to be thankful for everything that blooms,
SUSAN BLISS and JOANNA do not bloom this year.
RED ORCHID, not very good, too dark and brownish,
Some UNKNOWNS of varying looks, some of them quite pretty,
IRIS GERMANICA "YELLOW" (that´s how the nurseries name them here) with a
wonderful fragrance, that one I will divide and multiply.
Some siberians and wild pseudacorus mirror themselves in my little pond
which is full of toadbabies.
And, four seedlings from G-MA AMANDA have survived winter and seem to do
well!
Now, that is not much to boast about, of course, compared to your
thousands of irises, but I am so proud of my little collection, I just
had to tell you!
I have thought a lot about what reblooming really is. On a true
rebloomer you ought to find both seedpods and flowers on the same time,
or? I have seen that on G-ma Amanda a couple of times, but I am still
not sure, I wonder if reblooming isn´t actually the result of
disturbing the plant by replanting or in other ways changing its
conditions rather than a true quality of the plant itself?
Well, reblooming is nice when it works but I wish something better.
I do really wish that modern genetics could pick the gene for continuous
blooming from, for example, Bellis perennis and put it into an iris!
Just think!
