Hi Everybody
I think I need a holiday to recover from my holiday, three weeks in New
Zealand. Plus had to digest over a 1,000 e-mails over the weekend. I had
time to check for urgent e-mails but not time to read everything.
We had a wonderful time. had a motorhome, so no packing and unpacking
everyday. After the vast distance we're used to in Australia, NZ is very
compact. However a mistake many Australians make is to think you can cover
Aust type distances in a day. We found 250 -300 km a day to be a reasonable
distance. This allows time for looking around and also the slower travelling
times becauses of the the more winding roads. The slowest was 45min to go
35km. This is Queen Charlotte Drive between Picton and Havelock at the top
of the South Island.( There is a much longer but hardly any more time main
road)
The road winds along the bottom of the Malbourgh Sounds and the scencery is
magnificent with many beautiful untouched coves.
My 5yo is ecstatic, she saw penguins, seals, snow, tuatara (rare living
lizard fossil), kiwis and other rare birds.
While we were in the North Island the was a huge early snow dump in the
South Island and while we were in the SI there were storms and floods in the
NI. We had lovely weather almost all the way, except a bit of rain in NI.
Even had fine weather on the West Coast of the SI. It has stunning scenery
but a hugely high rain fall.
We're very happy, caught up with all my family, did some fun touristy things
(jet-boats, hot pools etc) and had a break from work, meet lovely people
(fellow travelers and locals). Unfortunately we found we had no time to
catch up on other iris people. If you can it's a great place to visit and if
