Thanks, Colleen. It is, indeed, madness ... or perhaps good
old-fashioned stubborness. I just hate defeat, and I am loathe to give
up until and unless I have exhausted all reasonable avenues to success.
To be perfectly honest, however, I am amazed at just how many blooming
plants actually can thrive in this climate. Delphiniums love it here, as
do hostas, bleeding hearts, columbines, various bellflowers, primulas,
malvas, alliums, astilbes, monkshood, even ladyslipper orchids, plus many
others. The tough old farmstead irises thrive under the absolute worst
conditions here. It's just these doggone modern TBs that can't
necessarily hack it.

We get plenty of sunlight hours during the summer months. I don't
generally have to close up the barn till a little before 10:00 p.m.
Winter is a different matter. Darkness falls between 4:30-5:00 p.m., and
temps can fall down to -40 F on the very coldest nights (rarely). I
can't say I enjoy such extreme cold, but I absolutely can not tolerate
extreme heat. When temps start rising above 75 F, my temper gets
proportionately shorter. There are times when DH is no doubt certain I'm
not living nearly far enough north. LOL!
