Nice to hear from a newbie. I was one myself not so long ago.
Most irises do quite well in this part of the country. Some of the shortest ones, which bloom along with the earliest spring bulbs, do better in cold climates than in warmer ones.
When you plant them, the top of the light brown fleshy rhizome at the base of the stalk should be more or less even with the surface of the soil, exposed to the sun. No need to mulch bearded irises; in fact, they hate mulch! It may even cause bacterial rot. The roots which project from the rhizome should be completely covered, however. Some folks dig a hole and create a mound of soil within the hole. They place the rhizome on top of the mound with the roots going down to the bottom of the hole. Then they pull the soil around the roots.

I am writing to you because I just read your email on iris/talk and I was thinking of purchasing irises for my parents 75 th anniversary. since you live in buffalo, I figured I would ask what irises thrive up there in your region? And as far as the care is concerned, how deep do you plant them? Do you mulch them over for the winter? i would appreciate any input.
