Re: TB: My Driveway Iris Garden

Whoops! I mentioned a lysimachia ciliata purpurescens as a companion plant for tall bearded irises. After further research, I believe that would be a definite no-no! This plant likes boggy areas and can spread rapidly. Might work better with some of the species irises!

The succulent, purple leaved plant I will actually use is a gorgeous sedum, 'Purple Emperor,' similar to Autumn Joy except for the purple foliage and dusty rose flowers that show up in the summer.

Just had the local garden club in for a look. They went ga-ga, of course! Told them about the iris rhizome sale coming up July 28 at the Botanical Gardens in Buffalo, NY.

  Hi, Folks,

Haven't been on here much lately but I simply MUST tell you about my
  driveway iris garden!

  First of all, I know it's really spring for sure (I live near Buffalo, NY;
spring can be iffy here) when the driveway is loaded up with all these
plants in pots that haven't made it into the ground yet. Some of them have
been in pots for a couple of years already, making the twice yearly trip
  between driveway and poly hut.

Anyway, today there must be 50 irises out there, blooming their beautiful
heads off in the driveway! It's a drizzly, overcast day, but lo! I can play
around in my driveway garden without gettng muddy feet! I can tell what
will bloom with what, and it's easy to move things around in their pots
until everything looks just right! I've made two wonderful combination
groupings of these irises so far today.

Here's one combo I'm really proud of:

RINKY DINK, BB, rose-buff peach; purple plicata wash on falls

KEEPING UP APPEARANCES, lightly ruffled mauve pink standards with wide
blended band on pearl pink falls

JOAN'S PARTY, almost opposite in coloration from KUA

RUTH BLACK, Orchid pink-buff blended standards; pearl lavender falls centers
blended to orchid and edged in salmon lace; heavily ruffled and laced.

QUEEN IN CALICO, light orange with light purple plicata markings, echoing
  Rinky Dink

SALSA RIO, a gorgeous red-purple with a bright yellow markings high on the
  hafts

Heuchera 'Purple Petticoats,' one of the red-purple leafed cultivars

Lysimachia ciliata purpuresans, a red-purple, succulent leaved perennial

Can you see these arranged and planted around a purple smokebush? Guess
what I'll be doing as soon as the sun shines again.

What do your driveway gardens look like?
