Until I read The World of Iris with Ben Hager's expert advice that moving time for iris should be about 6 wk. after blooming, I always, repeat, always moved mine as soon after bloom season as I could. In many years of such treatment I never noticed any poorer results than I do now by following the prescribed, later transplant time. In fact, I sometimes think it went better for me. Maybe it was the wrong thing, but the iris didn't seem to know that, so they responded just fine. Now remember, that was here in NW Iowa, so maybe it would not be the same in other localities. Usually it isn't as hot earlier as it gets to be by mid-July (our 6-8 wk. after bloom time) which may make a difference, too. All in all, I think the evidence is plain that iris are one tough plant, hard to kill unless, of course, you just paid for a brand new introduction and didn't lavish all affection and loving care on it!
