LOL! Oh, Iris Moose,
If you only knew the consternation that is caused by posts such as yours
below! I don't know if you will get "flamed" or not (there is a wide
difference in definition of the term "flame" here <BG>), but you will
definitely get a reaction....
The people on this list all love iris - that is clear. However, there is
a very wide range of personalities once you get past that common love of
a beautiful flower. Some of the people on this list have been kind,
gentle, welcoming, supportive of newcomers, but not all. When I first
joined, that was my experience.
I am actually a very linear/sequential person....I like structure,
order, all the ducks (and irises!) lined up in a row. So I certainly
understand the usefulness of subject tags. On the other hand, I have a
certain rebellious streak, as well. ;-) I don't like it when people feel
my behavior should be dictated by their convenience. Like most folks, I
like to be asked, but I don't like to be told.
I, too, was quite "put off" by the tone of some administrative messages
shortly after I joined. I was actually quite upset at the way certain
off-topic political subjects were handled right after 9/11. However, I
enjoy the comments on this list so much that I have resigned myself to
accepting the bad along with the good. Even though I generally am a
"law-abiding citizen" I must confess to just a little bit of mischievous
pleasure when I hit the reply button and see the ADMIN tag on my message
and know how terribly important it is to some that no one but John
should have that august privilege. ;-)
Folks like myself really just want to get along. We enjoy hearing other
people's experiences with irises, we enjoy learning from really
knowledgeable gardeners, and we occasionally like to share our own
experiences. Most of the time, we try to comply with the "rules" and
just bite our tongues when the periodic rant appears, comforting
ourselves with the fact that people are simply different.
Bill Wells (who prefers to be a "citizen" rather than a "subject" with
or without a tag)
