  I grew up on a farm in central Washington.  My folks always used an insecticide on the flower gardens called Black Leaf 40.  It's active ingredient was nicotine, deadly to insects.  I remember the can with the skull and cross bones on it.  Of course, we didn't use it on anything we ate.
