CULT:fallen iris

Another possible reason for fallen iris is hard pan or heavily tamped
soil. My son's property is hardpan big time. Their iris fall over
until they are in the ground a couple years and able to anchor
themselves well.

Our home site is on a creek bank and the site for the foundation had to
be raised over a foot and the contractor hauled gravel in and tamped it
down to resemble a paved highway. We put compost, loam and sand on top
of the tamped material and I used older iris in the plantings next to
the house. I try to stake the plants but the stakes can not be pounded
hard enough to push them in the ground so they tend to fall over with
the iris stalks. The iris which have been in place about three years
are able to stand on their own now. I do not know if they will continue
to do so after I divide them.
