I have an old historic iris called Gypsy Queen that I'm totally in love
with.

Each and every blossom she puts out will make me stop and admire her. The
only thing I ever regret about the flower is it's small like many of the old
historics.
I've never tried to set a pod on a bearded iris before but I think I'm going
to try this year. I'd like to get some babies with a similar look to GQ but
bigger. I don't have a lot of TB's to choose from but I do have a couple of
large pale blues and a big frilly white that do well here. Am I right in
assuming the pale blues and whites are less likely to corrupt the GQ color?
Kind of trying to go for the same thing with the irises as I do with my
daylilies, a plant that will stand up to my screwy weather and consistently
make me stop and ooogle. No time to fuss and spray and coddle an iris or a
daylily.
The pale flowers I have are pretty modern in form. Some are down right
lacey, frilly and flouncy. Will the tailored form come through with a
seedling? Can I expect something in between for frills? I to lean more
towards the real oldies as far as shape. They also can't be beat for
hardiness and increase here.
I've held back from doing this before because I didn't want to mangle any
flowers until I had enough to work with. I'm sure I will mangle a few
trying. Not like a daylily with all the parts hanging well out in the open.
Never even had a bee set a pod here on my beardeds. I really don't know what
to expect at all.
Are my thoughts heading in the right direction?
What do folks growing seed do with them in cold zones? I'm not sure about a
seed that may hang around and do nothing for nearly a year. Do I plant them
in shallow pots put them in a protected spot and let mother nature do her
thing. Should a put them in a cold frame for more protection?
I have the thoughts. Now what?
The big beardeds are just starting here.
