I was thinking of posting something about this, but since John said something further about Dr. Ellyson anyway, it is appropriate to take the thread a little farther.  Dr. and Mrs. Ellyson (way back sometime, I don't know how long ago) gave Region a cup, known now at least as the Ellyson Cup,. to be used as a traveling trophy each year to the hybridizer from Region 21 who got the most Honorable Mention votes for an iris from the AIS judges who vote for those things.  Allan Ensminger has won it several times since I' ve been living here, and Opal Wulf has won it more than once, too.  She has it currently, having gotten it in 2000 or 2001, I can't remember which, for Wistful Wisteria, an MTB.  I don't know any more than that; thanks to Gary White, Region 21 Asst. RVP, for sharing that about the Ellysons' gift.  Larry Harder would have known much more about this, probably the complete history and circumstances surrounding the establishment of the award.  (Another time we find ourselves missing him.)  Because this is a traveling trophy the winners used to receive a ceramic duplicate of the cup as a "keeper", but I believe that for the past few years they have been given a medal to keep instead.  Allan Ensminger probably knew the Ellysons personally, and as Allan is still alive (his 90th birthday was June 16) and well, in possession of all his faculties, and even still doing some hybridizing, I'm sure he would be able to tell quite a bit more.  Gary, who also lives in Lincoln, NE, (as does Allan) may well be tracking down more information from that best source.
