Guess different weather conditions can cause all kinds of things. With 
hundreds of stalks over the past 16 or 17 years, I've not seen that happen.  
The pod always dries out and starts to crack, but the stalk has to be removed 
like earlier ones. 

Since the stalk collapsed before the pod reached maturity, I wonder how long 
the pod had been without nourishment and if the seed will be viable. Would be 
interested in the results.

Just my experiences.
