How interesting - this happens fairly often for me. In fact, more often
than not. In the past, I've not had many stalks with pods that stayed
green and alive till the pods split. I haven't paid any attention to
seed viability from these pods in the past because it usually happens
right before the pod is mature. Or at least that's what I've always
assumed. The green color on the pods start to fade so it has almost a
whitish tint and starts looking a little like it is drying before it
finally starts to split open. Pods with these dried stalks seem to
mature and split with normal looking seeds at the same rate as those
that manage to hang on. >

long the pod had been without nourishment and if the seed will be
viable. Would be interested in the results.>
I've been watching them pretty closely to make sure they don't hit the
dirt, & taking notes, so will know how many days it will be before pod
split. When they fall over, I usually just prop them up on adjacent
iris fans unless the stalk starts to disintegrate. Last year (?)
somebody posted that they just leave 'preemie' pods outdoors & let them
photosynthesize as long as they are still green, so I've been doing the
same. Usually they don't start drying up like this until 6 weeks or
more.

I've taken notes every year on pod development, but this is the first
year I've had a notebook dedicated to hybridizing efforts, so finding
the notes from previous years may be a challenge! But I will look.
