Sorry. . . .  Didn't mean the stalk stayed as green and fresh looking as 
spring!   There is some aging of the stalk. How is the pod to get nourishment 
if the stalk isn't alive?  Just meant I'd never had any dry up, turn 
completely brown, or collapse to the point of snapping or breaking, unless 
there is rot, of course.  And I'm thinking you mean spontaneous?  Maybe I 
harvest quicker.  I tend to harvest the pods when I first notice the pod 
start to split.  Lost a few seed once by letting the pod stay too long and 
don't like to take chances.  

I've always done a daily walk through of the stalks to make sure they are 
okay.  Not such a problem this year with only 10 pods, but a pretty sizable 
task when it was 80 or so per season.  (You almost forget where they are!)

The time from cross to harvest seems shorter than in the early 90's.  Or is 
it just my faulty memory?
