My first impression was that your stalks were weak and bending over.Stalks
starting to die at the top is another matter. Have you ever had your soil
tested? Your spring watering techniques ( 2 feet high and risen' ) probably
leaches a lot out of your gravelly soil.
Have you split one of the stalks to check for signs of insects or rot(odor ,
mush,or dried powdery stuff) ? It's got to be easier than surgically slicing
into a seed pod!
