Cathy, I suspect you may have something here!  Linda, If you still have some 
of these stalks see if you see any damage from chewing or boring insects.  

Betty Wilkerson Zone 7 SouthCentral Kentucky  ----Remind me to tell you about 
the year that most all the pods & stalks rotted.  Slimed is more like it.  
Wet and overcast spring and summer.  I remember putting the seeds & pod 
"slime" in a flour sifter and hosing until I only had seed left!  Ugh!  
Planted things that year that I thought couldn't possibly come up cause 
they'd only been crossed about 5 weeks when the stalks started rotting.  I 
had stalks and pods everywhere.  Most sprouted anyway.  (58 known crosses) 
Would have probably been 158 if not for all the rot.
