Hi fans,
I wanted to share my successes with early planting with you and maybe
help convince some of you in the colder climates to get your irises into
the ground a little earlier.
The irises arrived early last year so I planted immediately in mid July
after a quick bleach bath. The results were astounding with a 100%
survival rate. All cvs that were added to the garden a month later
fared much worse with only 50% survival.
None of the cultivars got any special attention and were planted
directly into the existing soil here with is a combo of clay, sand and
decomposed tree leaves. Bone meal was the only supplement.
Now the cool news, first year bloom percentage is around 95 % which
ain't too shabby. These results simply put to shame all of my past
experiences in trying to grow TB irises.
I'm a very happy guy since my expectations were considerably lower just
so I wouldn't feel disappointed.
Now....if I could only remain focused in my hybridizing goals, I may
just get somewhere ;-0
