RE: CULT: Early planting

Chris,
We have to agree with you. Although local lore says plant as late as
possible we don't always follow directions<G>. Last year we planted two
beds in early August and a third bed in Mid September. All three beds hold
over 100 iris each. They were all solarized and reconditioned. The two
beds that were planted early are much more developed and bloomed much
heavier than the one that was planted in September. Our summers are
tremendously hot and dry and we have always worried about planting too early
but last years results are hard to argue with.

Hi fans,

I wanted to share my successes with early planting with you and maybe
help convince some of you in the colder climates to get your irises into
the ground a little earlier.

The irises arrived early last year so I planted immediately in mid July
after a quick bleach bath. The results were astounding with a 100%
survival rate. All cvs that were added to the garden a month later
fared much worse with only 50% survival.

None of the cultivars got any special attention and were planted
directly into the existing soil here with is a combo of clay, sand and
decomposed tree leaves. Bone meal was the only supplement.

Now the cool news, first year bloom percentage is around 95 % which
ain't too shabby. These results simply put to shame all of my past
experiences in trying to grow TB irises.

I'm a very happy guy since my expectations were considerably lower just
so I wouldn't feel disappointed.

Now....if I could only remain focused in my hybridizing goals, I may
just get somewhere ;-0
