Morning inspection of the shriveling iris stalks revealed one with an
insect larvae inside of the hollowed out bloomstalk. Tentatively
identified as Papaipema nebris, the common stalk borer, or cornstalk
borer. Starts out life in grass, then moves to a nice juicy stalk of
ragweed or some other plant to finish eating its way to maturity.
Another reason to keep grass out of the irises! And to keep it mowed or
burned in areas adjacent to the irises.
No sign of rot in any of the rhizomes with shriveling bloomstalks, so I
was pretty sure it wasn't the 'real' iris borer, but did some websearch
identification, just to be sure.
Whew!
