what are the signs of rot? do they get mushy or no leaves?

I didn't know about the bleach treatment. what is that, a fungus preventative 
measure? Is ultra bleach OK to use, i can't find the regular old fashion 
bleach in the stores around here? I think the "ultra" is stronger.
