Donald: Can't you spray those iris with something like garlic juice or hot pepper juice in a solution, something that the hoppers would not like? I don't know of one of these things would be a deterrent, but it might be worth a try. I know rabbits and squirrels don't like them, but, of course, that's a far cry from a grasshopper.
