Arnold,
>Donald: Can't you spray those iris with something like garlic juice or hot
pepper juice in a solution, something that the hoppers would not like?
I've tried lots of things through the years, but haven't found anything that
gives good protection from them. They are so mobile you could kill
everything in the yard in the morning and by nightfall wouldn't know any
were gone. It's a hazard of living in the country, I guess. In town, every
other neighbor is doing something or using something to eliminate pests.
Out here, there are thousands of acres of habitat for them to hatch in with
no interference. Some years are worse than others. This is a bad one. I
have them in any year, but not every year in the numbers they are present
currently. In a moderate year they don't eat roses. This year the roses
have no leaves left, just stems stripped bare. They may eat themselves out
early and be gone toward mid to late summer. That happens sometimes, but
we've had enough rain that I doubt it happens soon. They have a lot to eat.
