When my folks had them, they spent all day eating bugs and particularly
relished grasshoppers!

This is true enough.  Off and on through the years I've had chickens and
enjoyed watching them and hearing them.  However, poultry in the yard, on
the porch, in the garage and in the flowerbeds has some drawbacks.  Plus
they are prone to disaster here via fox and coyotes, not to mention hawks,
skunks and other assorted varmints.  At this time I'm not wanting to trouble
with them, though I'm sure to have them around again at some point.
