Re: SAD RHIZOMES

Hi Robin,

I never posted results because I never got around to testing it.

As I understand it, every place a leaf grows out of a rhizome is a
potential site for a new increase. The growth point of a rhizome puts
out a chemical that prevents the development of increases until after
the rhizome has bloomed and the chemical starts to subside.

Sometimes the production of the chemical does not subside and the
axilary never develope into increases. So cut off the growth point where
the bloomstalk grew, slice the rhizome vertically along its long axis,
let the cut dry out and seal up for a day or two, then plant them about
2 inches deep. The lack of sunlight is thought to aid in stimulating the
start of increases.

I know several commercial growers that use this process on regular
rhizomes to help increase stock. Sort of like cutting a potato into
several pieces to start multiple plants.

There was a article about burying them in sand in one of the AIS
bulletins in the early 90's.
