I use the shorter handled but larger tined fork--potato fork(?). For large 
and/or tangled clumps, I use a sharp knife (a straight edged paring knife) to 
cut the clump into segments at least 2 days earlier, giving the cuts time to 
'heal.'  This way, I'm only lifting one section at a time and it puts less stress 
on both the fork and myself.
