As a pitchfork advocate, I'll add my 2-cents worth in case it hasn't been
mentioned.! Not only does it make it easier to shake off the dirt by jiggling
the rz -- but what is even more important, it is less likely to injure any
part of the rzs NOR cut off any roots too short. I guess it has been
mentioned that the fork goes in behind the rzs to be dug, --after all the soil has
been shaken off and you can manhandle the rz and poke more soil off between
the roots, etc - and admiring how long some of the roots can be! I grab them
close to the rz with one hand and with handy scissors cut them all off within
an inch of what hangs out from my hand. Some people lay them on a table and
whack them off with a knife before planting. And then, the important thing
is to "hang them up by their feet " i.e. the roots! I usually have baskets or
around the bottom of the railing on the deck, or a little wire fence around a
plot or something, so any water down in the rz can drain out --otherwise
that could promote rot.
Sorry if any of this is repetition, I haven't read all my email yet -- been
"working" in the garden in between those everlasting showers, hard to believe
we were complaining of a drought last year! Rosalie NR Baltimore, USA
