Re: TB: PBF - Elsa Sass ID help

Thanks Neil & Laurie,

Well, looks like I have another NOID - pale yellow (at least until next
year). The reason I had marked out Desert Song is that I didn't have a
record of it ever blooming for me. . But there is a high probability, I
just didn't get the blooming date recorded and/or lost the identity to this
iris early in its life. The catalog picture (1960s) show Desert Song as
having an orange beard and this does not. HIPS does not have an image of
Desert Song so hadn't been able to compare. When I go back to my 1960
records, I find that I had Desert Song in the approximate location this
iris is growing.

I didn't know what a glaciata was. Thanks, I had never thought of removing
a fall or standard and looking at the veining going down into the center.
Next year, I'll check the details of the veining. I'm quite sure the veins
run all the way down.

>Mickey,

Elsa Sass is a glaciata. A glaciata may be recognized if you remove one of
the falls (or standards for that matter) and no violet or purple veining
shows. There is simply the yellow or white of the flower (or pink, as pink
glaciatas do exist, I believe) all the way to the base of the segment. I
think the PBF of Elsa is strong enough that it will be present under all
circumstances at least to some degree.

Desert Song is a cream rather than an icy light yellow and is not a
glaciata.
It does have the veining at the base of the segments. As I recall, it is
does
not have PBF.
