CULT: Plant Zone Hardiness Map

The new Plant Hardiness Zone Map has been apparently available since late
March. It is supposed to be available at http://www.ars.usda.gov/ but I
could not find it there. It is available as a .PDF file from
http://www.ahs.org/pdfs/USDA_Map_3.03.pdf (direct link to the file). It is a
relatively large file if you are a modem user (5.6 MB), so it will take a
bit of time to download it. If you chose just to open the file on the
download, you will not be able to save it on your machine through the
Acrobat Reader, as the option is disabled, you will need to save it directly
to a location on your machine and then open it to have a handy copy. (Just
rechecking here and if you have the option to go to FILE, you may be able to
use Save As.)

The reason why the save is disabled may be that the map is strictly
available on-line so that it may be periodically updated as new information
comes in about temperatures.

Viewing the map may be a bit tricky also. When I set the Acrobat Reader for
full screen, I was able to get the map at 100%, but my screen resolution is
1280 x 1024, which is probably much higher than most of you run. I was able
to magnify the map to 1600% without any apparent loss of resolution, but it
made it a bit hard to handle. I found that 200% gave me what I needed to see
that I am now considered to be fully ensconced in Zone 7, rather than the
Zone 6/7 I have been using to sign off my infrequent notes here. The
percent you need to pinpoint your location may vary, but 200% seems like a
good place to start.
