Griff,
A little afternoon shade seems to help. Through the years, I've had two
beds that experienced afternoon shade. They seemed to give more rebloom than
other gardens in full sunlight.
Those conclusions are less than scientific. The garden here has no shade at
all except what the iris plants afford each other. In 2004, in a season
with relatively mild summer, rebloom was rampant. In 2005, rebloomers I'd not
grown before like Total Recall & Cantina rebloomed well. Last year, I had
good summer bloom on some early seedlings. In addition, Immortality & Pink
Attraction bloomed well throughout the summer.
At the very least, afternoon sunshine makes viewing a bit more pleasant.
The only rebloom I've experienced with Champagne Elegance was when I lived at
Alvaton. It was a very hot July. This was the bed that had afternoon shade.
In 2004 I bought CE from Schreiners. In a bed where most bloomed in 2005
and almost everything bloomed in 2006, CE has not bloomed . . . at all, either
spring, summer or fall!
Lack of rain fall (or water) and extreme heat both seem to shut down rebloom
here. Not sure about humidity. I've a couple of irises that will put up
stalks in extreme heat just to have the blooms turn brown before they can
open.
Bowling Green is reporting less than half an inch of rain in June. Farmers
are being interviewed about drought. We're down 8+ inches for the year and
launching docks have been shut down on the lakes. However, on June 2nd my
garden received 1.5 inches of rain. Such is summer rain fall.
