Dauber's Lament

I have an orange seedling
It's vigorous and tall
And every rhizome big enough
Puts up a stalk each fall

Impervious to leaf spot
And it has a bit of lace
But over and above all else
It has a homely face

So I bred it to a pretty one
And now what do I see?
A slightly nicer orange child
At least it seems to me

So I sigh and line them out
14 - I plant them all
The way they grow, I'm sure that they
Will all rebloom this fall

A slightly better seedling
I'm sure you know my fears
At this rate, I'll have something great
In, Oh, say, 20 years.
