Re: HYB: rebloom

Gets real hot here in the summer, 105F to 112F, but we have continual summer bloom. we are relatively far south in terms of the continental US so our sunlight is a bit more direct then a majority of the country. Don't think heat or direct rays have a lot to do with rebloom other than to encourage growth and, probably, rebloom...(goes against conventional wisdom). Seems like a steady water source, ph of soil and nutrients play a very large role in rebloom. Have noticed that consistent 2/3 week irrigation will encourage summer and fall rebloom as long as the soil is not depleted. If the iris don't get enough water they go dormant and don't rebloom. Takes longer for them to come out of the dormancy in fall making rebloom less likely. In addition, certain varieties just do better in some areas. For us, Immoratlity and Champagne Elegance are not solid rebloomers. $.02 worth

I have had CHAMPAGNE ELEGANCE for several years and have nice seedlings from 
it, but it has never rebloomed for me.  Today, it has a stalk up.  And,
surprise, it's from a rhizome that was accidentally left lying on the ground under an oak tree a couple of years ago. So here it comes, in full shade! 
(It may get some slanting rays in early morning and late evening, but
otherwise, not.)  I'm beginning to wonder if the degree of sun, heat and
humidity in this area works against rebloom, and if more shade might be
beneficial.  Anyone else have thoughts on that?  --  Griff
