Linda -- There must be something about that limestone water. Long may it flow! The family of a late friend of mine, Chester Coates, owned the land on which the entrance to Mammoth Cave is located until they sold it to the government many years ago. There was a brand of whiskey called Old Cave, which, if I recall right, used Mammoth Cave water in its production. Chet had one of the old labels, which depicted a man drinking the whiskey while another man held a pistol to his head. Chet said his dad had posed for the artist as the drinker. My cousin, the late Scott Breckinridge, recounted how an ancestor was converted by a minister who was preaching from a jail cell -- the same minister being credited with the invention of bourbon whiskey, "a beverage," wrote Scott, "to which our family has always extended loyal support." -- Griff

Betty, saw on news that Jack Daniel's whiskey is running short of water. They even showed the cave in pix where water usually comes and some lake that didn't have much water. Now, this is really getting serious.!!!! They say they will stop making it. HA! (I'm sure some wives will be happy about that.)Right now, I'm getting loads of bark chips to just spread on top. That's allI know to do . I've nearly gone totally underground w water, so there is none on the surface to heat up & burn things. Yes I'm sure next fall I'll end up cutting some of those hoses. Already stocking up on radiator clamps. The general idea was to cultivate the top layer of soil as a form ofmoisture retention. Anyone have any thoughts on this process? Much of thecountry is experiencing drought after an early spring that devastated our bloom season.I was reminded of this as I watched a neighboring farmer cultivate his corn crop. His corn has grown despite the weather problems. He and I received1.5 inches of rain on the 2nd that was not recorded in other parts of the region. Many lifetimes ago I had more gardening energy. I watered the garden oncea week and then cultivated the surface as soon as it dried. It was the prettiest garden I've grown. It didn't hurt that I'd applied very aged manure from Dad's old barn.I'm reminded of these things again this morning as I cultivate the seedling beds. Thank goodness for swivel hoes! Most of it was done while seated onmy kneeler! I will plant a little further apart next year! I had the problems in 2004 with the one bed that might have been related to pre-emergent.I've decided to delay applying pre-emergent on the seedling beds until I'msure the seedlings have developed good root systems. ________________________________________________________ Betty W. in South-central KY Zone 6 ---If you don't cross them, you can't plant them!
