I emailed Barry Blyth to ask about rebloom habit of FINAL EPISODE. He replied that some 80 to 90% of all irises can rebloom now and then, even if with just one stalk. He also says that with his growing conditions, they can bloom any time of year. He doesn't try to keep track of what reblooms and what doesn't. They re-set every year, which doesn't allow for much rebloom.
FINAL E is "a good rebloomer when it is left for 2 seasons, flowering any time".
Never thought I'd see Barry B use the words "good" and "rebloomer" in the same sentence! ;-)
So, not sure what to make of this re: "summer" rebloom breeding potential in my growing conditions.
Betty, you've often mentioned sporadic rebloom, especially in reference to CA and Oz reports of rebloom.
If Chuck is correct, that cycle and "summer" rebloom are separate sets of genes/alleles, do you think the sporadic rebloomers might carry the 'summer" rebloom genes or the "cycle" genes or neither, and just outgrow their bloom inhibiting hormones & not really have any genes for rebloom at all? Wouldn't <that> be a bummer!
So far, the only rebloom I've seen in the seedling patch using sporadic rebloomers in crosses with "summer" bloomers has been cycle (and sometimes often only maiden fall bloom).
I guess those of us making these types of 1/6 and 1/36 probability of summer rebloom will maybe know the answer to that question in a few years. Or I should say we may know what some of the answers aren't...
The FINAL E crosses made this year are the first I've made with a 'sporadic' rebloomer registered as RE. Another one that would have been <very> interesting to cross with IMM....
Betty, FE is quite short here, well below registered height, but put some better roots under it, and it should pass along height.
