Re: Re: REB: Final Episode, sporadic

Linda,

All I have are opinions, personal beliefs.

Sometimes my terminology is all my own. To my knowledge, no one has
designated the specific classes of individual cultivars which rebloom.
<vbg>

The terms "repeat bloom" and "cycle bloom" seem rather self
explanatory, to me.

Sporadic and multiple rebloomers are both sporadic. No one can
designate just when any of them will rebloom. (other than passing on
what has happened in the past.)

Multiple rebloomers -- can, and often do, send up stalks from June -
July.

Sporadic rebloomser--occasionally send up a stalk from June - July.

As I see it, the difference between the two is frequency of rebloom.
Their triggers/requirements seem to be different.

Sporadic rebloomers primarily bloom is more moderate climates, like CA
& Australia. They rarely rebloom for me. It is possible that some of
the sporadic rebloomers are cycle rebloomers and only "occasionally"
rebloom in the fall? Of course! Since I do not live in any of these
locals, I can not make that determination.

Maybe one day, someone will make it their goal to record the DATES when
and where all of these bloom? Richard Richards is the only person in CA
that reports this way to the Recorder. Unless, or until, this happens,
I don't see how we can further classify the sporadic rebloomers.

Last year, Joe Ghio send me a rhizome of COMFORTABLE, which contained a
stalk. I received the shipment just after July 4 so I concluded it
gives summer bloom in CA. Or did at least one time. Since it was not
maiden bloom, I feel free to classify it as a "sporadic summer
rebloomer."

<<Betty, you've often mentioned sporadic rebloom, especially in
reference to CA and Oz reports of rebloom.B >>

Not sure that helps any?

I emailed Barry Blyth to ask about rebloom habit of FINAL EPISODE. He
replied that some 80 to 90% of all irises can rebloom now and then,
even if with just one stalk. He also says that with his growing
conditions, they can bloom any time of year. He doesn't try to keep
track of what reblooms and what doesn't. They re-set every year, which
doesn't allow for much rebloom.B B FINAL E is "a good rebloomer when it is left for 2 seasons, flowering any time".B B Never thought I'd see Barry B use the words "good" and "rebloomer" in the same sentence! ;-)B B So, not sure what to make of this re: "summer" rebloom breeding potential in my growing conditions.B B Betty, you've often mentioned sporadic rebloom, especially in reference to CA and Oz reports of rebloom.B B If Chuck is correct, that cycle and "summer" rebloom are separate sets
of genes/alleles, do you think the sporadic rebloomers might carry the
'summer" rebloom genes or the "cycle" genes or neither, and just
outgrow their bloom inhibiting hormones & not really have any genes for
rebloom at all? Wouldn't <that> be a bummer!B B So far, the only rebloom I've seen in the seedling patch using sporadic
rebloomers in crosses with "summer" bloomers has been cycle (and
sometimes often only maiden fall bloom).B B I guess those of us making these types of 1/6 and 1/36 probability of
summer rebloom will maybe know the answer to that question in a few
years. Or I should say we may know what some of the answers aren't...B B The FINAL E crosses made this year are the first I've made with a
'sporadic' rebloomer registered as RE. Another one that would have been
<very> interesting to cross with IMM....B B Betty, FE is quite short here, well below registered height, but put some better roots under it, and it should pass along height.B -- Linda Mann east Tennessee USA zone 7/8B East Tennessee Iris Society <http://www.DiscoverET.org/etis>B Region 7, Kentucky-Tennessee <http://www.aisregion7.org>B American Iris Society web site <http://www.irises.org>B talk archives: <http://www.hort.net/lists/iris-talk/>B photos archives: <http://www.hort.net/lists/iris-photos/>B online R&I <http://www.irisregister.com>B B ---------------------------------------------------------------------B To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with theB message text UNSUBSCRIBE IRISB B
