Robert,

I agree. Mandating doesn't work.

<<mandating does not work.>>

Sorry if I've offended. I lose irises from certain hybridizers, but some of
their things live and do well. I just go into it knowing I'm likely to lose a
lot of them. Also, put a lot in pots because I've learned certain ones live
in pots where they won't live in the garden. I've just taken the anger out of
the process. If I don't expect 100% then I can handle the losses better.
Either way, I only save strong and robust seedlings, whatever their pedigree.

It's taken me 25 years to reach this point, but most average gardeners won't
fight it that long. Some learn to buy their irises from the display garden or
another local source.

Way too many people just give up on irises. They get tired of throwing money
away.

Just for the record, I'm all for the test gardens. Good luck in organizing
them.

Betty; as i understand Pauls' idea I do not think he is requiring any mandate.
here are lots of things i would love to mandate. For example that every
egistration be avvomapied with pictures not just of the floer but the clump
and
hat they be displayed on the wiki. Bit I know that will not work. You can not
orce people to do something even when it is within their best interest. Of
ourse I argue, cajole, and lecture, but mandating does not work.
Particaipation
n a test garden system must be voluntary. If results are reported and
published
hey may have a significanr effect. But the data must also be rational.
ometimes I see arguments saying this hybridizers plants do not grow. Yry I
have
ear a number of people say they had no problem with that hybridizers plants
ntil they read those posts. We must be very careful in what we actually can
ubstantiate. It is often easy for this group, or others to get on a tear about
bout a particular plant and yet others in their are!
a who are less vocal report no problems. Postive results are really more
mportant than negative and are obviously more substantiated.
