My best black is 'Old Black Magic.' It blooms spectacularly without fail every year for me on healthy, very vigorous plants, and has nice strong stalks. Actually, I'd say it's one of my very best performers *overall*, and I grow hundreds of different TBs, so that's saying something! I am in N. Illinois, but like you, am on the line between zones 5a and 5b.
