Re: CULT: Bog Gardens alternatives

I dug a hole in the garden 3feet deep in the center for an open water
effect and a place for the mosquito fish to hide. Then on the edges I dug
away from the center another 4 feet but a slope into the center maybe 18
inches deep. That is my bog garden, the area around the center pond area. I
put ponds plants in the center and bog plants on the edges including JI's,
lousiana's, chinese water chestnuts and bog lilies. I dug the pond/bog
after a neighbor replaced their kid's above ground pool liner because it
was leaking. I patched a few of the pinhole leaks and lined my pond/bog
with it. I put rocks around the edges. It looks totally natural and has
been in now for 8 years with no muss or fuss. The fish breed in the deep
areas and eat the mosquitos. Total cost $2.00 for fish. It is a pain when
you want to divide the iris though. They get so big that it is diffucult to
dig them up off the liner. Another problem that I have had is that they get
so tall that it gets difficult to see the pond so now I only put them on
three sides so I can view the water lilies on the fourth side.
