You have to be extremly careful with chichen litter. It is very potent!
Needs to age for quite awhile before it can be used or it will burn
everything up.
I've heard on the iris-l & other sources,that a pepper mix will
discourage animals out of the garden. I'm growing hot peppers just for
this, this year. I have opossums & other critters here. They can do a
lot of damage in one night. Also have stray cats breeding in one of my
beds. I'm determined to get rid of my problem,too. If the pepper
cocoction doesn't work, We may have to go to more drastic solutions.
